MONSTERS SWEEP GOL'DIGGERS, FINISH FOURTH IN SBL
COLUMBUS, GA - The Chattahoochee Monsters swept the Gainesville Gol'Diggers in dramatic fashion on the last day of the SunBelt Baseball League regular season to finish fourth overall.
With the wins, the Monsters finished tied with the Atlanta Crackers for fourth place but had the head-to-head series tiebreaker advantage. That means the Monsters will host the Crackers in the first game of the wild card series Monday night at 7:05 pm at Golden Park.
Game one was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams that came down to the home half of the seventh inning. After the Monsters scored twice to cut the Gainesville lead from 5-2 to 5-4, Chattahoochee came into the final frame needing one run to tie and two for the win. With the bases loaded and two outs, Zion Morris hit a ground ball to short and beat out the throw scoring a run. Gainesville argued the call instead of getting the ball back in, allowing an alert Johnathan Williams to score the winning run as the throw came late to the plate.
The Monsters carried the momentum of that victory into game two of the doubleheader, taking it from a close game where they held a 3-2 lead to a blowout when the scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a bases-clearing three-run single by Justin Veloz to help propel the Monsters to a 7-3 win and set off the celebration.
With the losses, the Gol'Diggers end up finishing second in the SBL, meaning the Columbus Chatt-a-Hoots are the regular season champions for the first time in franchise history.
First pitch of the wild card game at Golden Park is slated for 7:05 pm. Ticket information will be made available on Monday online at MonstersBB.com and the teams social media outlets.
